Andy Lopez Talks Life Lessons, Coaching and Pocket Radar™

In a recent interview, Andy Lopez, head baseball coach at the University of Arizona, discussed how he trained a national championship winning baseball team. The Arizona Wildcats went undefeated in the D1 College World Series and denied the three-peat dreams of last year’s champions, the University of South Carolina, to become the 2012 NCAA National Champions.

Halfway through the interview Coach Lopez talked about using the Pocket Radar. “We have 6 Pocket Radars in our program, [it’s] a great tool,” Lopez said. “I use them in the bullpen every day.”

The three-time National Baseball Coach-of-the-Year was shown the device over a year ago and bought several on the spot.  “I was shocked [when I first saw the Pocket Radar],” he said.

His advice to coaches is to treat every job they have as “the big time.”  “Where you’re at is the most important time and do the best job you can right where you’re at,” he said.

This year was Lopez’s first national championship with Arizona.  He explained two things that helped the team win the championship: “One is that their mental toughness really grew and their confidence really grew with that toughness. The other thing is they really got [physically] stronger as the season went on.”

Other topics Coach Lopez talked about included his decision to not turn pro and the influence of his parents on his coaching style. “In my quiet moments I’m like my dad and when I’m going crazy on the field or during practice I’m just like my mom,” he said.
